Gifts for PhD students who are halfway through and need a little pick-me-up
Many PhD students experience periods of uncertainty and anxiety. Maybe you dive into academic literature and start to feel overwhelmed. Maybe you have to start collecting data and it doesn’t go as planned. Maybe you can’t even figure out what your research should look like. Maybe your paper gets rejected by reviewer #2, or you present at a conference and then feel like everyone was better than you. Or maybe your crisis doesn’t come until you start writing your thesis… and then it hits hard! Yeap, that’s the Mid-PhD crisis…
Whether it only lasts a short period of time, or most of your PhD journey, or only shows up once or several times during your doctoral research, feeling lost, imposter syndrome and overall doubting of your abilities can all show up during these times. And a pick-me-up can go a long way!
So, how about putting a smile on a PhDoer who is going through a mid-PhD crisis? I’ll give you some ideas that I know they are going to love!
Sometimes all a PhD student needs in the middle of a mid-PhD crisis is a big hug… and that’s exactly what this candle promises! It has a screw top and is a good size, so it lasts a while. I haven’t lit mine up yet, so I can’t comment on the scent, but it’s supposed to be calming a refreshing.
Coloring books for adults are big right now. How about one made just for PhD students? The Phd Life is a “Snarky, Humorous & Relatable Adult Coloring Book”. I got this as a Christmas present last year!
A funny wine-tumbler is a fun gift that will put a smile on the face of any PhD student, but specially one that is going through a mid-PhD crisis. I mean… if Grad School is not enough reason for wine, I don’t know what is! I found this one on Amazon, and there are other designs to choose from like this one that says: This Wine Pairs Well With My PhD
